The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that
provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs
throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis.
Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary)
students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and
graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the
public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians,
and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Under supervision of the Community Service faculty and Small Animal
Medicine Services supervisor, perform the following tasks:
Coordinate, schedule, and provide technical support for physical
examinations, diagnostic, dental, surgical and therapeutic
procedures and daily activities; provide anesthesia technical
- Stand, bend, kneel, squat, reach above shoulder level and move
about on hard surfaces up to 8 or 10 hours each day.
- Ability to acutely discern heart and lung sounds using a
-Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50
-Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
-Contact with animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
- Transport patients in carriers, on leashes, on gurneys and move
patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages. Work
-May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods
of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields,
goggles, sleeves and head covers.
-Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice
(including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday
-Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in
accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and
-Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia,
cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
-Work in high traffic areas, confined, or small spaces, noisy
environments and tolerate unpleasant odors.
-May require working with or around areas with sick animals,
hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught
Work in other areas of the VMTH/CCAH/VMII as needed.

This position is a critical position and subject to a background

-Experience working as a technician in a small animal veterinary
-Experience obtaining a temperature, pulse and respiratory rate of
small animal patients.
-Experience in calculating drug dosages and administering
medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular, topically
-Experience interviewing clients to obtain patient medical status
-Experience providing client education and instruction on patient
-Interpersonal and written communication skills to interact
verbally and legibly with a diverse group of people to include
clinicians, clients, staff and students in a professional, positive
and collegial manner.
-Experience with small animal (canine/feline) periodontal
procedures and equipment, dental radiography techniques and
equipment, and patient home care options.
-Experience in receiving and discharge of patients.
-Experience performing venipuncture and placing and maintaining
-Experience performing various lab tests including, but not limited
to, PCV, TP, Azosticks, Urine Dip stick, Urine specific gravity.
Operate various machines, including but not limited to centrifuge,
microscope, refractometer, pulse oximeter, ECG, blood pressure
-Experience assessing normal physiologic and laboratory data,
recognizing when a patient is in difficulty, and responding
-Experience using common monitoring devices, including, but not
limited to: Doppler, ECG, capnograph and pulse oximeter.
-Experience administering a variety of prescribed anesthetic drugs,
maintaining, monitoring anesthesia, monitoring and assessing
patient, responding to changes and recovery of small animal (canine
and feline) patients. Preferred Qualifications:
-A current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
-Experience operating a computer, inputting and retrieving medical
record data, utilizing various software programs for word
processing, spreadsheets, and scheduling.
-Experience to provide instruction to students, clinicians and
staff in restraint of small animal (canine and feline) patients,
obtaining a variety of biological samples, administration of
medications, surgical asepsis and OR and patient preparation.
-Knowledge of contagious and zoonotic diseases and infection
control and disinfection in a hospital environment.
-Knowledge of microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, anatomy and
husbandry of dogs and cats to understand, teach and explain written
or verbal instructions.
-Experience providing restraint of small animal patients (canine
and feline) for physical examinations, procedures or treatments and
acquisition of a variety of biological samples, vaccination
administration, parenteral fluids or medications using established
-Ability to recognize and respond to equipment failures and report
