Job Summary


Our research is focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms of aging that lead to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. To do this, our group uses in vitro tools, tissue culture, and mouse models to study changes in the lysosomal system with aging and disease with the ultimate goal of developing ways to modify this system to treat disease.

The project will focus on using novel imaging and biochemical tools to study regional changes in the lysosomal system in mice and tissue culture. The Staff Research Associate will have key roles that include maintenance of our small mouse colony and genotyping as well as assisting with the development and execution of biochemical and confocal imaging techniques. Once proficiency is demonstrated, they will learn tissue culture techniques. This position will be directly trained by the PI on the project, Dr. Lane-Donovan. Strong communication skills and a background in molecular biology is required. A college degree is required and laboratory experience in wet lab experiments is required. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. Department Description

The Memory and Aging Center is an internationally renowned clinical research center with a diverse workforce of over 260 full time employees with offices and clinical research space located in the Sandler Neurosciences Building and multiple other buildings on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The MAC provides clinical care for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease processes; from this clinical population, external referrals, and direct recruitment efforts we enroll patients into more than 50 structured research protocols and/or treatment trials. We are a California Alzheimer's Research Center and a federal Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is the largest division within the Department of Neurology. The Department of Neurology is a teaching, research and clinical care unit within the School of Medicine (SOM). The Department of Neurology is a large, multi-site department, with locations including Mission Bay, Parnassus, Mt. Zion, ZSFG, VAMC and the Gladstone Institutes and is affiliated with the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. The department is constructed of 14 administrative divisions with 11 clinical specialties. The department has over 230 faculty and academic employees, 290 staff positions, and 170 trainees including: residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars. The Department has an annual operating budget in excess of $120M and has been the #1 recipient of NIH funding across all U.S. Departments of Neurology for the past 6 consecutive years, in addition to being the #1 recipient of philanthropic dollars across all departments at UCSF. Required Qualifications

BA/BS degree in related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Working knowledge of lab equipment, including balances, pH meters, etc.Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including western blotting and images
