The Prenatal Screening Coordinator participates in the management
of the State of California Prenatal Screening Program (PSN), a
state-wide prenatal birth defects screening program funded by the
California Department of Health Services, Genetic Disease Screening
Program (GDPS) in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division of the
Department of OB/GYN. This role involves telephoning obstetrical
providers and their staff to obtain clinical information to
finalize PNS results, inform staff of positive results, and
facilitates patient's access to follow-up prenatal diagnosis
* Experience managing cases and effectively communicating with
prenatal care providers and staff, laboratory personnel and Genetic
Disease Screening Program staff.
* Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health
administration and/or health education.
* General knowledge of genetics and birth defects.
* Knowledge of Alpha Fetoprotein, HCG, Inhibin, PAPP-A and uE3 as
used in prenatal screening and significance of differing
* Knowledge of at least one specialty field relating to genetics,
maternal-child health or public health.
* Knowledge of available health care resources for appropriate
* Preferred licenses or certification in any one of the following
areas: as a genetic counselor; as a registered nurse with
obstetrics or public health with at least a bachelors and
preferably a masters degree; as a medical school graduate,
preferably with obstetrics or public health experience; or
possession of a Masters degree in Public Health. Other allied
health professionals with genetics or prenatal may be
Occasional need to work overtime and/or alternate shifts, weekends,
variable hours, on-call, etc. Sit for extended periods of time.
This position may be subject to a criminal background
investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical
evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
