Job Description Position Summary Teachers work diligently to deliver Summit---s mission: ---Inspiring students to cultivate a heart for Christ, a passion for learning, and compassion for others .--- The Summit school teacher will prayerfully help students learn subject matter, attitudes, and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible Christians to the praise and glory of God. Personal Qualifications The teacher shall be one who has received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and who fully agrees with Summit---s Statement of Faith. The teacher shall be a regular attender in good standing at a local Bible-based church and shall lead a mature Christian Life. He/she shall be a person with the spiritual, academic and leadership abilities of one who feels called by God to the teaching profession. The teacher shall reflect the purpose of the school to honor Christ in every class and in every activity. Professional Qualifications A bachelor---s degree is required; ACSI or current state teaching credential is preferred. Excellent classroom management skills. Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to carry out tasks with minimal supervision. Practice good stewardship of materials and supplies. Ability to handle challenging situations/confrontations with grace. A workable knowledge of or ability to learn basic applications such as Microsoft Windows programs, email, and the school information system. Physical ability and health to perform the basic functions of teaching, including standing, walking (including stairs), bending, lifting, reaching, pushing and pulling. LiveScan Fingerprint Clearance with the DOJ. (Application provided during interview process.) Current TB, CPR and first aid certification, or willingness to get them done in a timely fashion. Reporting Relationships The teacher reports directly to the Principal or designee. Evaluated annually by administration. Observed on formal and informal basis throughout the year. Work Schedule The contracted number of workdays specified in the annual teacher contract. Daily hours: 30 minutes before instructional day begins until 30 minutes after student dismissal Specific Job Expectations Spiritual Leadership --- The teacher is responsible to: Inspire students to cultivate a heart for Christ and compassion for others . Model in speech, actions, and attitude, a consistent daily walk with Jesus Christ. Motivate students to accept God---s gift of salvation and grow in their faith. Create a climate for spiritual growth by making the classroom a safe place for questions about faith and by leading students to find answers to those questions in God---s word. Lead students to the realization that their self-worth and the worth of others is found in Christ as human beings created in the image of God. Give Christ-centered, biblical counsel to students as needs arise. Work with school colleagues to address the school-wide spiritual formation needs of students. Instructional Leadership --- The teacher is responsible to: Inspire students to cultivate a passion for learning . Have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Christian philosophy of education to help in the development of and commitment to a Christian worldview in the students and school. Have a knowledge of the physical/emotional developmental needs of the children at the age level they teach so questions and issues can be addressed appropriately. Integrate biblical principles and the Christian worldview into all aspects of the curriculum and classroom activities. Ensure that his or her classroom reflects a positive and professional Christian work environment that is wholesome, nurturing, and loving. Teach classes as assigned by administration, following the school---s prescribed scope and sequence, curriculum, standards, and mission. Demonstrate knowledge --- and increasing mastery --- of the subject material. Plan broadly using yearly or semester plans and objectives to ensure that each subject matter scope and sequence is being fully addressed and plan weekly details using a lesson plan book. Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of the students, challenging each to do his best work. Employ valid teaching techniques and a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials that will provide for creative teaching, striving to reach the whole child --- spiritual, mental, physical, social, and emotional. Plan through approved channels a balanced use of field trips, guest speakers, and other media for a comprehensive approach to education. Use homework effectively for drill, review, enrichment, or project work without unnecessary or unproductive ---busy work.--- Assess the learning of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Provide a good learning environment by keeping proper discipline in the classroom and on the school premises for a good teaching environment and to support the school handbook. Show support for the biblical role of parents as those primarily responsible before God for their child---s education by involving parents (in prayer and volunteerism as appropriate) and by keeping them informed of concerns or deficiencies. The teacher must initiate dialog with parents over individual student concerns or respond in a timely manner when parents need information or have concerns or complaints. Professional Expectations Demonstrate humility and teachableness by seeking the counsel of the administrator, colleagues, and others when job-related problems arise rather than ignoring them. Follow established school policies, procedures and guidelines in a spirit of positive cooperation. Maintain the personal appearance of a professional educator that is a role model of cleanliness, modesty, and good taste. Participate in continuous professional development through professional reading, college course work, in-service days, workshops, and conferences. Recognize the need for good public relations, representing the school in a favorable and professional manner to Summit---s constituency and the general public. Provide input and recommendations for administrative and managerial functions in the school and contribute to the general improvement of the school program. Deal directly and frankly with the school administration in an earnest effort to resolve differences of opinion when they exist. Inform the administration in a timely manner if unable to fulfill any assigned duty. Administrative Responsibilities --- The teacher is responsible to: 1. Accomplish school goals and objectives and support the policies and procedures as communicated by school administration or board policy. 2. Understand supervision and how to lead in a positive manner. 3. Respect professional ethics that require confidentiality concerning the sharing of information about children, parents, or staff. 4. Participate in staff orientation times, staff devotions, department meetings and other staff meetings as scheduled by administration. 5. Work cooperatively within the Summit community by helping the staff, students, and volunteers function efficiently, effectively, and productively. 6. Meet as needed with other staff members to ensure coordination of programs and facilitate the prompt resolution of problems. 7. Participate in formal and informal parent-teacher conferences. 8. Maintain a physical presence with students by attending and, when possible, participating in school chapels, assemblies, athletic events, and other presentations. 9. Maintain regular and accurate records of attendance and grades to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of each student---s progress. Keep students, parents and administration adequately informed of student progress or deficiencies; give sufficient notice of student failures. 10. Arrange for substitute teachers when needed and assist them in carrying out their responsibilities by preparing and providing adequate lesson plans. 11. Know the procedures for dealing with emergency situations in the classroom and school. Conduct required emergency safety drills in coordination with school leadership. 12. Report to the appropriate individual any campus safety, health, and/or maintenance needs that are observed. Additional Duties and Responsibilities --- It is expected that the Summit Christian School teacher will: Maintain a clean, attractive, well-ordered classroom. Accept responsibility for the accounting, securing and use of all funds collected in class. Supervise extra-curricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned. Participate in Summit---s development programs, fund-raising activities, and student recruitment and retention efforts. Participate in end-of-year school closing processes, such as inventorying textbooks, furniture and equipment. Perform other duties as assigned by the administration. 7. Demonstrates positive character qualities such as enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality. Meets everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism.
